Thinking About a Few Things

My mind has been flowing like a river today…

…first thing. I have a page on Facebook called “What’s for Dinner”. Let me know if you want an invite. It is a group where we post what we are having or had for dinner. Whether homemade, store bought or even a trip to a restaurant. Yesterday someone posted they made clam chowder. A few people had made some comments and one gal (a friend of a sister of one of my friend’s) posted something with the “F Bomb” in her response. I asked her to please delete the comment. She came back quite snarky at me asking if “ass” was okay. I replied with the following message: I don’t think it is …but the F bomb is truly not okay. As the one and only admin of this group which I started for friends and family to share what they are cooking/having for meals to give other ideas I guess i am able to say what I will and will not allow on my page. If you find you must use swear words to communicate I will as I mentioned previously block you from the group. I find no need to use the F bomb or any other swear words and if that offends you – that is on you. This is my group and very family friendly. I do not want my children or grandchildren exposed to that type of language and since I can’t control the world, I can control my Facebook pages. Got absolutely no response from her and she didn’t delete her comment with what I think is an offensive word.

I then went back on as Admin (I am the one and only) and posted this to the whole group:

Note from Admin: This is a private, family friendly group made up of friends and family members and friends of my friends. I, as the one and only admin, feel saddened that I had to have a conversation about appropriate language with an adult…so I will say it loud and clear:Using the F BOMB in this group will not be tolerated. I will ask you politely to remove any post with that word (or for that matter any other word I find offensive (or that someone else messages me about that is offensive) one time. If you choose to argue with me. I will remove the comment/post and if it happens by the same person a second time you will be blocked from this group. If anyone has a problem with this I would suggest you remove yourself from this group immediately.

Still no response from her. A sweet friend of mine responded to her as well “Perhaps this isn’t the group for you? Ali is the group owner. I feel we are “in her house” when we are here. If you cannot abide by the “house rules”, and need to provoke the homeowner with your comments, this isn’t the place for you. This is a private group, not an open forum.”

Just curious what others think? I feel like I need to give an explanation of why I feel how I feel and yet at the same time I wonder why people think they need to swear in a conversation. Don’t get me wrong, I have swore before and knowing myself, probably will again – usually in a fit of anger. Not right I know but I am human.

The next thing I have been pondering is friendship. We have had quite a few talks with The Girl since she has been in our care about friends, acquaintances, and Besties. Can girls have boy friends without being boyfriend/girlfriend. I say yes. I have male friends and my hubby who is my Bestie of Bestie friends and we don’t see that as a problem. Ron also has female friends and that is okay with me. We have couple friends and single friends. We have close friendships with people we are physically far from and yet when we have been apart for any length of time when we do get back together it is like no time has passed at all…well except for maybe a few more grey hairs.

One of the things we told The Girl was that you can have many friends. And do different things with different friends. We are friends with Jen & Lee ~ we love to go out to eat together, have a beer or glass of wine together and just visit together. Another couple we are friends with, Pat & Pat – we love to go out for Chinese food together, have been to a county fair together, shared many a meal but we would never think of drinking with them. And that is okay too.

I think of my friend Merel, we didn’t see each other for 25+ years but when we finally did get back together it was as if time hadn’t stopped. We are each other’s sister, we share her Mom and enjoy each other’s company. We have been through the thick and thin together. And then there is Dee, my Bestie….we have so much fun together and can talk up a storm – Ron and I were just talking about mine and Dee’s coffee date that lasted for over 8 hours at the local Blaine Woods one day. We had been together all day, not realizing we had taken up the corner for the whole day until I noticed it was getting dark outside…where did the time go….we laughed and talked, laughed and cried together and we always say we are ready to do it again any chance we get…can’t wait for Covid to disappear or at least for Washington to open up the state quarantine guidelines so we can make a trip back and go have that long needed and awaited coffee date.

Friendships…how would you describe a friend? Do you have to see, physically see that person to remain friends? Or can you “see” each other through email and texts and the occasional phone call and still be the best of friends?

One of the things Ron and I have talked about a lot lately is our need for some local friends. Jen and Lee are local and we try to get together at least once each week we are off and we are so thankful they moved to Texas to NC. Yet, what Ron and I are realizing is that we need more people in our local circle of friends…people we go to church with, can hang out for game night with, maybe meet for a meal or even have over for a picnic meal at our trailer. I am so thankful for our Northwood Chapel family, for our New Life BC family, our Cedarcreek family and yet look forward to expanding our church family here in NC.

And this leads me to another question…how do you make new friends? where do you make new friends at? What do you look for in new friends?

Another thing I have been thinking about is our upcoming road trip to Florida…4 more days and we get to drive to Florida to see our son, Brandon, and his wife, Danalyn and three of our four grandsons! Time is speeding past and this Grammy needs some hugs!!!

(I don’t know this author but love the picture)

and get some

tall son hugs!!! again not a picture of Brandon and me – but you get the idea!!!

Guess that’s all for today, need to run some errands and get a roast in the oven for dinner tonight!!! Hope everyone has a great day!!!

The above verse was the scripture art for today. As I read it I have hope, hope even in the midst of struggling times. Yesterday was a hard day for me, the day before was a hard day for me but today I feel energized and awake.

The alarm went off with a bang this morning and as I woke from a dream I thought “glad that was a dream…what a mess.” Not sure of all of it…I was in the car with a friend of a friend after having an argument with my friend because I volunteered her to do a ceramic piece without speaking to her…she was really pissed even after I apologized a lot…we were packing up our little house to move and I was feeling stressed because the deadline was looming and Ron was taking his own sweet time doing things.  Then in the car I had to go to the bathroom..finally found a port-a-potty…more like a port-a-six-potty…it even had college girls cleaning it…went into three different stalls before finding one with toilet paper.  I had college girls walking into the stall helping me clean up.  I kept apologizing for the mess though looking around all the mess was on paper not on the toilet or even me…I kept saying I was sorry to my friend even though I don’t even know where she was, told our mutual friend that my friend was being pretty harsh just because I said she would make this other gal something…there was no rush and she could do it when she wanted…I woke up thinking…boy what a dream…when the alarm scared the you know what out of me LOL…as I walked to the bathroom I kept telling myself I was glad it was a dream…not sure what all this moving is going on in my dreams, poop everywhere but nowhere.  But very relieved it was a dream.

Dreams are weird at times…and then I wonder what does it all mean? I think dreams happen because our days are so full of stuff that our dreams are trying to work out things that are going on in our minds…what do you think?

I was scrolling through Facebook yesterday and thinking about when Ron and I got married, almost 45 years ago and wondered what happened to the pastor who married us. I found the Facebook page for the little church we were married in in Las Vegas and reached out to see if anyone remembered or knew Gary. Found out Gary died in 1978 after being sick for a quite a while. We left Las Vegas in October 1977 when the Air Force transferred us to the Netherlands, Camp New Amsterdam, Soesterberg, The Netherlands. Life was crazy for me/us…new babies, one baby dying, moving across the world at age 19, new beginnings and scary times. And thinking now, I was so wrapped up in me/us I forgot about our friends in Las Vegas. Oh I have thought about the friends we had there over the years and wonder where and how some of them are doing. But yet they are just a memory in my mind. And I am reminded that this world is not about me but about others…and then I think about our sermon from Sunday about being a disciple and the note I wrote out at the top of the page “Stop being selfish and focus on those who the Lord brings into my life.”

I am reminded to reach out to those I love and care about, let them know that I love and care for them…not just think about them but let them know. Whether they are close by or 2,000 miles from me…I need to reach out to others.

And then another memory popped up…Jamie was in Iraq and I was so fearful that he was going to be killed over there…I was so often paralyzed in fear I could hardly get out of bed. One day Pastor Charles called to see how I was doing and I told him I was still in bed (around 11am) and he told me he had a project for me. I was to get up, get dressed, call our friend Jack and tell him I was coming to his house to clean it for him. Jack’s wife, Dee had passed away about 4 months before BUT I couldn’t tell Jack why I was coming to clean his house (because Charles told me too!) I was just to go and do it. I remember calling Jack and at first he was hesitant but I insisted. I remember pulling up in the driveway and thinking…what the heck am I doing? Why would Charles think I needed to clean Jack’s house? But I did what I was told because that’s what good girls do…that’s another story for another day…back to cleaning Jack’s house.

I spent about 4 hours there. The dog followed me from room to room. I dusted and swept, mopped and wiped down counter tops, cleaned out the fridge and changed the sheets on the beds and even put fresh flowers on the center of the dining room table. I left before Jack got home. A couple of weeks later he told me that he smiled when he came in and saw the flowers…they reminded him of his sweet wife Dee and thanked me for the pleasant memory. I remember when I drove away how I felt good, not for cleaning the house but for doing something for someone else just because. Reaching out to someone else…and that’s the reminder to me today…get out of my skin and reach out to others in my life.

We have had a rough week with the kidlets and I hate going off with a negative air in the home so this morning I’m going to reach out to the kidlets…let’s have watermelon for breakfast!!! Let’s start the day fresh!!!

Response and Thoughts to a Friend

I was chatting with a friend today and she had tears seeping out her eyes. I asked if everything was okay….DUH, of course not, she is crying you fool!!! Later I sent her a message and asked if there was anything I could do for her…and our conversation went like this:

(My Friend) No worries. I’ma little better. I’m trying to keep perspective on the positive things. I was having a moment of being overwhelmed. Thank you for asking. Itll be alright. God is good.

(Me) I know the feeling…that was how I was last night about AZ and her school work. I’m going to stick to my schedule and what the kids get done, they get done. There is no way the teachers/principal can expect us as parents to do all the teachers are expecting and would do…that is asking for failure and issues between parents/kids which is not where we need to go. I think this is the time for us to be giving ourselves extra grace. If this really is how life is going to be for two more months or longer we need to take care of ourselves as moms/wives/women because if we don’t take care of ourselves there is no way we can take care of others.

Yes, thank you for that reminder and perspective. I need to remember GRACE on myself and to make sure I am taking care of me. Keeping as much as I can routine for me and our family.

That’s the discussion we had with AR & AZ tonight…that this is a hard time for everyone for different reasons. We have to have a schedule and to remember that we are not their teachers and their teachers are not us. Just like our Relief Home Parent does some things differently then we do things doesn’t make it right or wrong,..it just is.

And then I found myself thinking of lots of other things I wanted to say but kidlets needs called for my attention so we ended the conversation there.

We were off this past weekend…we spent a lot of time watching TV shows we had recorded. We got lots of rest and YET when we came back on duty on Monday my stress level seemed to escalate faster than the elevator at the Statue of Liberty and I couldn’t pin point what was going on.

I spent a lot of time outside yesterday watching the kidlets playing, talking with the other home parents here at the ranch…we are 9 adults with 10 kids onsite. AND I am so thankful that we are together in this social distancing/season of time that we are not alone. Our boss has been wonderful ~ keeping the main gate locked, must have code to get in, doing counseling for the kidlets via ZOOM/SKYPE, doing tele visits with doctors as needed and being available by phone, text and email. Though we are isolating ourselves we are truly not alone.

At one point yesterday I just wanted to cry. In fact, I laid my head in my hands and said “I don’t even know what to cook for dinner tonight.” Such a simple thing but seemed insurmountable. And it’s not like we don’t have any food … we have one chest freezer and one upright freezer full of meat, pecans, veggies, treats, did I say pecans, ice cream, pecans…yes lots and lots of pecans!!! We have a pantry full of canned goods, baking items and all sorts of food items…just needing and waiting to be cooked. But I still couldn’t think of what to feed these little chillins.

And I have much to be thankful for…we have our jobs, we are getting paid, we have the money to pay our bills, we have health insurance which makes my diabetes medication affordable, we are in reasonably good health and even though we are not near Jamie or Brandon or their families we are able to chat with them via text, phone, FaceTime and Facebook. And we know they are safe, our grandchildren are safe and their needs are being met.

We have much to be thankful for…some sweet dear friends gifted me a laptop…and with the help of our son, Brandon and friend Lee, I have gotten everything off of the laptop that was not a very good dance partner (the one that crashed) and put on this new to me laptop…in fact I am typing on it now!! I was so excited when I was able to get the pictures from the old laptop to the new one…One reason was because while we were gate guarding Ron took on the project of scanning the two totes (each 32 gallon sized) of pictures that represent our 44 years of married life, our parents and grandparents and the thought that they might not be saved was definitely a cause for some of my anxiety. But I have them all!!! And yes we will be making a back up of them!!!

One of my favorite pictures from a long time ago

undefined

is this one of me in the first grade. My mom was so mad at me when she saw this picture because she had styled my hair and the cute little bow on the side of my head…I moved it 🙂 she was not happy…but I have come to love and cherish this sweet little girl!!

And this picture of Max…

undefined

with his Pop Pop before he was a part of our lives, which allows me to see how much his siblings look like him and we are so thankful he is a part of our family!!!

As I write and watch and listen to our kidlets I am reminded that we really do have much to be thankful for…and so I want to encourage each of you to find something positive about today…it doesn’t have to be a BIG thing, it can be something as simple as I am thankful that I was able to make myself a cup of coffee and I had some of my favorite creamer to put into it.

What are you thankful for today?

Balance, Behavior, Habits, Memories, Mom Life

Little Things = Big Memories

Once a mom, always a mom…is how I responded to a friends post on Facebook and it took me down memory lane on a weekend in Post Falls, ID with our son, Brandon and his family. Brandon was there to coach basketball and we love basketball and seeing our kids and grands so off we went to Post Falls. We were in our motor home, in between jobs so a mini vacation sounded great!!! So off to basketball we went…after the tournament we found out that the only two roads in/out of Lewiston, ID (where Brandon and his family were living) was closed due to snow so onto plan B…find something for dinner for the boys and hunker them down at the hotel for another night.

Brandon took a count of the money the kids had which turned out to be almost nothing since they thought they were headed home…so mom mode kicked in. I made two big pans of spaghetti, bought some garlic bread, salad, oranges and milk…kids love milk and took dinner to the hotel for the basketball team, parents, coaches, the bus driver and even the hotel desk clerk. Lots of laughter and good eating was had by all.

Brandon along with the other parents thanked me for pitching in and I remember saying “once a sports mom, always a sports mom”…just this time it was a coaches mom. I love being a mom and Grammy and am thankful for this opportunity to be mom to our kidlets here at the ranch!

And now I’m a baseball & softball mom!!! AR is playing baseball…it is fun to watch him as he tries every position and throws the ball like he’s making a lay up on the basketball court BUT hey he’s trying!!! AZ is playing softball, well she will be once the practices start happening. They have been delayed due to rainy days and a sick coach but one day soon we hope to see her running the bases and having as much fun as her younger brother!

On another note life just keeps happening…this morning in one of the groups I belong to the question was asked

“It’s Friday…How was your week?

My response started like this: I would like to just be hibernating but have to be a responsible and flexible adult today and this weekend…one of the other HP’s is in the hospital…the doctor’s are trying to figure out what’s going on…and then it continued:

a few years ago my word was FLEXIBLE…then INTENTIONAL…and this year it is CHAOS TO CALMNESS…why oh why do I have to stay focused on all three when I would rather just be drinking coffee and crocheting and watching my crime shows…my eating has been terrible for the past few weeks and I’m supposed to get a fasting blood test on Monday and then see the doctor…don’t really want to see her…I don’t need a lecture!!! I need to get my act together but instead I just want to eat chocolate covered graham crackers!!!

And now I just want to cry…I am 62 years old and feel like I am just sabotaging myself….why can’t I just eat what I want to eat…I hate diabetes and depression….and I hate that my desire to get healthy is just not enough, that I need self-discipline and will power and motivation to get my act together, to make healthy food choices, to choose to drink water over a delicious cup of hot coffee…the rant continues…

My bestie and I have often asked “why don’t I/we do the things I/we need to do and what we know to do?” So I googled the question and this is the first response that came up.

It is by Jean~Paul Pangolas:

  1. You are trading short term pleasure for long term sacrifice. In other words, you are doing things that provide you immediate pleasure rather than focusing on the things that are hard to do but that will give you significant rewards in the future.
The reason this is happening is because you don’t have a big enough WHY. You are clear on what you need to do to be successful but your WHY isn’t big enough. I don’t know your personal details but I will give you an example: If you are a salesman and needs to make 5 sales a month you will need to contact X amount of clients to close the call. If your why isn’t big enough to actually put in the work and effort your motive will not get you moving. If you had to get those 5 sales to feed your child every month, that is a huge WHY and will get you moving. In the other hand if you live with your parents and don’t need the extra money, your WHY will not push you to get the results you want.
Okay, I can agree with this one.
  2. Unconsciously you are being rewarded for your current behavior. The activities and things you are doing now are giving you more pleasure than the pain of doing the things you need to do to be successful. Okay, I can agree with this one.

Then https://sarabest.com/know-eating-basically-dont-just/ states: I get that there’s a lot of confusion out there these days around nutrition. This friend is doing paleo and that one’s gone vegan. One day coconut oil cures everything and the next it’s giving you heart disease.

But all the alarmist Facebook and local news stories aside, we all (kind of) know what we should be eating and not eating, right? We all know that more fruits and vegetables are good. We all know that too much sugar and processed foods are bad. We all know that fast food is a no-no.

Okay, great. So why don’t we just do that then? Why don’t we just eat lots and lots of fruits and veggies, no sugar or processed foods and never again roll through a drive thru? Why, in fact, are we (as a species) getting fatter and fatter every year? Why is diabetes on the rise, to the point where the number of people diagnosed with the disease is projected to double over the next thirty years? If we all (basically) know what we should be eating, why aren’t we doing it?

I believe that a big part of the problem is that we’re focusing too much on the food (how to eat more protein, avoiding carbs, etc.) and not focusing enough on the root cause of our seemingly irrational poor food choices. We’re smart people. Many of us have built successful careers or businesses, we’ve raised children, learned all kinds of skills and navigated really tough and complex situations in our lives. And yet, when it comes to making smart food choices and creating the healthy life and body that we want, we fall short again and again.

There are two primary reasons for this and they both have nothing to do with food, and everything to do with your brain. The first is the fascinating way your brain actually works, and the second is the way that many of us have learned to use food to manage our feelings. How Your Brain Works Let’s start with the first reason – how your brain works. Many of our habits, patterns and cravings around food are the result of a series of neural pathways that have been formed in our brain. These are behaviors we’ve learned because we’ve just practiced them so many times that they’ve now become automatic and easy. Doing something different now feels awkward and uncomfortable. We also have to factor in the reward centre of our brain and its friend, dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (a chemical in your brain) whose primary function is around reward-motivated learning. To grossly simplify some complex neuroscience, dopamine plays a big role in making you crave cupcakes when you see them on the party food table, or chocolate ice cream when your busy day is finally over. Thanks to dopamine, the reward centre of your brain remembers that these things felt good once so it pushes you to do it again.

Using Food to Manage Feelings The second reason we keep making poor food choices, despite knowing better is our tendency to use food to manage our feelings. You know how this goes. You feel stressed – you eat. You feel tired – you eat. You feel bored, restless, worried, unappreciated or overwhelmed – you eat. Over time, our brains have learned that eating makes us feel good (see dopamine connection above) and, as a result, we’ve developed a habit of eating whenever we have a feeling that doesn’t feel so good. We even use food to augment happy feelings. Again, our brains have learned that eating makes us feel good so when something fun or exciting happens, it triggers our brain to think, “this is great – eating would make this even BETTER!” By continuing to eat as a way to manage our feelings – good or bad, we actually develop physical neural pathways in the brain around these behaviours. We’re practicing these behaviours, in the same way you’d practice playing the piano, or mastering the perfect golf swing. After years (sometimes even decades) of practice, the tendency to turn to food to deal with our feelings has become second nature. We do it automatically and, even though we know it’s not serving our long-term goals, it somehow feels familiar and comforting, so we keep doing it and on and on the cycle goes.

But, here’s the good news! Recently, we’ve begun to learn more and more about a characteristic of the brain called “neuroplasticity.” Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to adapt, change and rewire itself. And it turns out that it’s something your brain is really good at. This means that, even long practiced behaviors like eating potato chips at night, or using food to manage our feelings, can be changed. Yay! Once you understand these two massive – and often completely overlooked – reasons behind our struggle to stay on track, and learn how to do the underlying work necessary to break the old wiring in your brain around food and create new wiring around new behaviors, the healthier choices start to feel natural and so much easier. Remember, it’s not about the food, it’s about training your brain to think about food in a whole new way. That’s the answer. That’s the true path to a relationship with food that feels healthy, balanced and easy. Okay this sounds great but can come someone please tell me how to change my mindset without having to buy into XYZ or watch a cazillion videos online which cost a $Cazillion????

Okay, enough rambling for today…I have a 5 year old that wants me to read to her…at least I know how to do that and it doesn’t cost me a ton of money!!!

Behavior, Family, Habits, Memories

Lock…hmm what does that mean?

Today’s Prompt word is LOCK. Think about it, read the definitions below, then sit for ten minutes (minimum) and write.

lock 1  (lk) n.

1. A device operated by a key, combination, or keycard and used, as on a door, for holding, closing, or securing.
2. A section of a waterway, such as a canal, closed off with gates, in which vessels in transit are raised or lowered by raising or lowering the water level of that section.
3. A mechanism in a firearm for exploding the charge.
This one of many kinds of locks I used as a kid like this
and praying that my bike would never get stolen even though it was locked up.
And telling our boys to always lock the bike when they went somewhere and how one day the boys went to the library and we saw the bike there and it was not locked.  So being the wonderful parents that we are, we picked up the bike and took it home.  First stopping at the local police station (a nice benefit living in a small town) and telling them we found our son’s bike not locked and to teach them a lesson we “stole” the bike.  And the boys would probably come slinking to the police station, hoping upon hope that someone actually turned their bike in and not actually stole it.  We asked the nice policeman if he would really lay it on the boys about “not locking” their bike and asking them how they were going to tell their parents the bike was gone.  And he said “no problem.”  He knew just what he was going to do.  We went on our merry way back to our home and put the bike along the backside of the house where it could not be seen.
About an hour later, the nice policeman gave our boys a ride home.  Can you say
?
Hubby and I walked out the door to meet the policeman and two very sad boys, who looked like they wanted to be anywhere but where they were.  Hubby said, “what’s going on?”  The boys started stuttering and finally mumbled something about the bike being stolen from the library and they went to the police department and the police officer drove them around a few streets looking for their stolen bike but alas no bike was to be found.
We let them stammer, stumble and mumble for about a minute.  I am sure the boys thought it was more like a lifetime.  Hubby said something to the effect “well, it looks like you boys will need to buy a new bike (it was mom’s bike) for mom…you know that’s close to $50 and they both groaned.  We told the nice policeman that we would handle it from here and thank you for bringing the boys home.  He walked towards his car as Ron led the boys towards the backyard…when yells of “you tricked us!”  “you are so mean.” and then the policeman came around the back and said “Boys you should be thankful your parents ‘tricked’ you…you still have the bike.  What lesson did you learn from all this?”  And in unison they both shouted “LOCK the dang bike!!!”
Do you have a lock story?  If so, feel free to write your own blog post or comment below.

Road Trip to Bethany, MO and back to Coffeyville, KS ~ Day 3

Friday ~ May 24th

Slept in and then made our way to breakfast…it was delicious and plentiful.  So nice to have good tasting food and a clean jovial place to enjoy our meal before heading out for the day.  We stayed at the Best Western just out of Kansas City.  And then we began our journey back to Coffeyville, KS.

The day started out overcast but slowly turned to blue skies and sunny.

One of the reasons Ron wanted to go to Leavenworth was to see the Federal Prison.  While he was stationed at McChord AFB, Tacoma, WA a few guys in his unit were arrested and court martialed for selling and promoting the use of a variety of drugs.  It is a huge prison.  They raise beef and buffalo and have a huge garden.  All behind fences with huge rolls of Constatina Wire.  All these pictures were taken from across the prison as there are lots of signs once you cross onto the federal prison property that say no pictures.  Across the street from the prison is a housing development with a huge park and ball fields – we wondered if that is where families of the prisoners stay when they come to visit the prisoners.

On a side note,

the picture of the blue bridge is for Ron’s cousins who live in Pasco, WA

and have to cross a blue bridge into the Tri-cities 🙂 .

The above pictures are in Leavenworth, KS itself.  There is definitely the older part of town where the Air Force Base is located and the newer part of town where all the shopping malls and fast food restaurants are.

While at the hotel Ron found a brochure that talked about a museum that sounded interesting so after touring the area of the prison and the air base we made our way over to the two historical homes.  Alas, the museum was closed that day 😦  We could only imagine the stories of those who had lived in the homes.  The one shown in the center was a private residence until 1964 when it was donated to the city of Leavenworth.

From the town of Leavenworth we made our way to the Veterans Hospital and Home where many of our veterans who have been injured over the years are treated and live.  We saw many veterans walking around the lawns…we say THANK YOU for serving and giving so much for us and our country.  In some of the pictures you can see where they are updating and making the dormitories/houses more habitable.

And then we continued on our drive.

We saw beautiful churches, a great looking motorhome and some cool looking barns

Driving through the countryside

And then we had a HICCUP.  The first flat tire we have had in our Jeep since we bought it in November 2010.  If you have been following our blog long, you know Ron loves to drive on the back roads and avoid the freeways as often as possible.  Ron started the process of changing the tire when our first big bump was that there was a locking lug nut and us with no tools to get it off.  After trying for about 15 minutes with what tools he had, Ron started trekking down the road to the nearest farmhome, no one was home so off to the second one.  I stayed at the Jeep, texting and praying, praying and texting watching three different trucks go speeding past with not a glance towards me or the Jeep 😦  and then Ron came back carrying a couple of tools.  He got the lug nuts off and tried to pull the tire off the Jeep ~ no such luck…fortunately by this time, a young man stopped to see if we needed assistance.  After talking for a few minutes and both he and Ron pulling on a tire that would not budge, the young man grabbed his hammer and gave the tire a big hit…and voila, the tire came off.  And with that the tire was changed and we were off to give the lady down the road her tools…found out the young man that helped us was her son!  Giving thanks to God that she was home and her son had a hammer.

A BIG Hiccup in our day :)
A BIG Hiccup in our day 🙂

We then made our way to Parsons, KS to pick up a few groceries

Almost back to Coffeyville, KS

And then we were home at our rig at the

Big Chief RV Park.

We had a great three days off and are excited to see how God continues to lead us.

Road Trip to Bethany, MO and Back to Coffeyville, KS ~ Day 2

Thursday, 5/23 ~ woke to grey skies and threats of rain.  Since our business with D & P was finished for the time being we decided to take a leisurely trip back to Coffeyville.

First stop was to get gas and look who was filling up across from us.

We love seeing old cars and how they travel.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We decided to take the roundabout way to get back to Coffeyville.

We both love to read books about the Amish and found a little Amish/Mennonite community that was sort of on our way home.  Well not really, but we were on a road trip right 🙂

We headed off to Jamesport, MO

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These are the sights along the road to Jamesport.

We love all the purple flowers along the way, old barns and crazy bouncy roads.  Even ran into a little construction…the guy holding the sign was sitting in his truck when we pulled up.  We said hi as we were passing and he said it was too cold to be standing outside 🙂  One of the things we really enjoyed was seeing the different fields and corn coming up, the perfect rows and this amazingly huge tree that from a distance looked like a person checking out the happenings along the road.Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24131

And then we got into the outskirts of the Amish/Mennonite community of Jamesport.  Anytime we see a Paint we comment and think about our friends Al & Selma and the story of their little foal that was the paint that ain’t.  Aren’t the white barns and houses beautiful along the green of the fields and the blue skies.Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24132

We arrived at Jamesport around 11 a.m. so after walking around a bit we decided to grab some lunch at Gingerich Family Restaurant.  Jamesport has a sign (red one) with the annual yearly activities…we are hoping to attend one of their weekends in the future.  There is a sweet little hotel, Jamesport Inn that would be perfect to spend a weekend at and touring around the area.  We laughed when we saw the sign “No Hitching”  and we did see a few buggy’s coming into town as we were leaving.Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24134

We saw lots of posters for a birding event coming up Memorial Day Weekend.  The farm pictured below was going to be lowering the bird houses/nests every hour on the hour so people could see the baby birds and the nests they call home.  During our drive we saw lots of gourd style bird houses.Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24135

More of the country side and Amish homesteads.  The picture in the middle was a home where the Amish were gathering for some type of meeting/event.  Must have been about 10 to 12 buggies there.  One thing we noticed as we were driving around the little Amish children would smile, wave and then quickly turn and hide their faces.Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24136

This group of pictures is of the Flory Creamery.  It is run by the Flory family, a Mennonite family.  We met a couple who were visiting the US from Russia inside the little store.  It was fun to talk with them as Ron shared about his father and his family escaping out of Siberia in 1928 near Harbin, China.  The gal said she knew exactly where Ron was talking about.  As we pulled in we saw the chicken house and where the calves are kept.  Ron enjoyed checking out some of their farm equipment.  I noticed the old fashioned merry-go-round in the front yard.  We enjoyed chatting with the young girl running the store, sampling about 12 different kinds of cheeses and of course buying a few packages.  The one thing they didn’t have was curds 😦  maybe next time.  I told Ron if we lived in a sticks n bricks home I would love one of the rocking chairs pictured in the bottom corner below.Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24137

As we continued on our drive we saw some interesting parks, an old cemetery began in the mid 1800’s and drove over some roads that were nothing more than ruts in the ground 🙂  At one point we had to laugh as we had made a full circle and traveled only about 30 miles (if we had gone in a straight line) from where we crossed the day before in Cameron, MO but we had actually driven over 125 miles 🙂Bethany, MO Trip 0522-24138

And then it was time to find a place to stay for the night.  We had gone from Bethany, MO to Jamesport, MO through Cameron, MO, and St. Joseph’s and crossed over into Kansas but backtracked about 10 miles to Platte City, MO and stayed at the Best Western where we had a much better stay than the night before.

Stay tuned for Day 3 of our Road Trip to Bethany, MO and back to Coffeyville, KS.

Do you remember this

Joplin to Coffeyville12

from our drive from Joplin, MO to Coffeyville, KS?

(if not you can read about it here)

Well one day last week we decided it was time to check those totes that had taken their own little adventure

and this is what we found:

This is Tote #1.  The lid came off and is now cracked and broken.

Also the lower right corner has a big chunk missing from the tote 😦

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A close up of the corner 😦

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Take the lid off, another tote inside

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It has a big piece missing from its right corner 😦

It was full of Fall decorations but nothing was found broken or missing 🙂

We transferred the contents to another tote 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And labeled it correctly 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then on to Tote #2

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tote #2 still had the zip ties on 2 of the 4 corners.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And this is what we found minus the stuffed bear and musical dog that we picked up off the road and had been drying up by the dog house for the past week.  You will be  happy to know the musical dog still works 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is the angel that broke.  It was special to us as Judy, Ron’s sister, had given it to us our very first Christmas in the motor home, 2006.  In the front it had the nativity scene with an ever-changing LED light behind it.  It was pretty and we enjoyed watching it change colors and brought peacefulness to the rig in the early evening hours after a busy day at work.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One of the wings that broke off.  We were missing a few pieces so we could not glue it back together so we said good-bye.  We will keep our eyes open to see if we can find something similar down the road.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If you know us at all, you know Christmas is one of our favorite holidays and we love to decorate.  When we first moved into our motor home we put 19 totes of Christmas decorations in our storage unit.  Over the past six years we have taken a couple of totes out to change-up the decorations of the motor home and now carry two totes of Christmas decorations along with a tote full, really full of Christmas lights that we decorate with wherever we are at Christmas.  We have also passed a few things onto our boys and their families and we plan on doing that some more when we are back in Whatcom County next January to March (2014) and yes, we are already planning our vacation for next year.

Do you like to decorate for Christmas?

How about for other holidays?

How many boxes or totes do you have stashed away that you bring out each holiday season.

And in case you are wondering we do have an Americana tote that comes out this next week where we will decorate with Red, White & Blue for the season of Memorial Day thru Labor Day!!

And the tote full of Fall decorations and a tote with Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter decorations!!

Oh the Little Things that Bring Us Joy

First off, I have to start with a special blessing we had today.

I got to Skype with this sweet momma and babyImage

And these two pumpkins

Image

And then once Grandpa got home he got to Skype with them too!!!

We heard about Christopher saving up his money to buy a special sprinkler ~ it has like 10 points that shoot water all over and because it is so warm there in Clackamas today (85′) and now that all the boys are awake from their naps they get to go play in the sprinkler…guess Grammy & Grandpa will have to wait for another day to see those sweet boys again.  We are always thankful for our blessings.

Last week on Ron’s three days off we ~ can you guess ??? that’s right

Went for a Drive.  This time to Oklahoma.

It was a 6 hour drive but we were probably at most 75 miles from our home on wheels.

I took over 70 pictures, but fortunately for y’all I put them into collages 🙂

Liberty, KS 0501to050213

We started out going to Oklahoma to get gas.  It is 20 cents a gallon cheaper 🙂  This is a little town we came upon.  The sign in the second picture down on the left side represents their school mascot and then we saw this cool grocery store. And a sweet little home.  As you can see the sky was filled with lots of blue and white puffy clouds.

Liberty, KS 0501to0502131

We like to go to old cemeteries and we saw this sign for “Relocated Cemeteries” so we wandered through.  One of the oldest markers was from the mid 1800’s.  Lots of babies 😦 and one of a mom and her four little ones lost over a period of 5 years.  The one in the 2nd picture down on the right side was in a family plot and this was for a newborn, I think he lived 3 days.  The 3rd one down on the right was quite interesting.  It had the marker then next to it was the round stone that had etchings of farm life, trees, a spring and field of grain.

Liberty, KS 0501to0502132

As we continued we came into the town where Will Rogers was born.  The 2nd picture down on the right is there town square and this is in the center where all four roads meet.  Loved the simplicity of the Methodist church and the street sign.

Liberty, KS 0501to0502133

On the main thorough fare is a replica of Will Roger’s home, a sign welcoming people to the town and the story of Will’s life and career.  The red barn and white face cow are behind the replica of the home. And see we were really there!

Liberty, KS 0501to0502134

As we continued on our drive we saw this roadside sign of one of the many battles in the area.  Ron had to show me the Jeep in the center picture – he wants to do that to our Jeep ~ ummm…don’t think so I already have a hard enough time getting into the Jeep 🙂  Along with more pictures of the surrounding area.

Liberty, KS 0501to0502135

I love hominy and there was a sign to Hominy, OK so I said “Let’s Go”  We found this little meat market and so went inside.  Ron has been looking for Head Cheese since we left Branson, but alas we still have not found any.  We did pick up some nice looking bacon (and we had some the other day and it was quite tasty) along with a nice rump roast.

Which is what I made for dinner tonight (Monday, 5/6).  It was very tasty and we have plenty left for two or three more meals.

Liberty, KS 0501to0502136

Another road sign of another battle.  And do you see the clouds forming there.  We decided we had better head for home.

After being home about 45 minutes the skies got dark, the thunder started rolling and the next day we had SNOW, yes snow in May in Kansas!!!  We couldn’t believe it.  I tried to take pictures through the window of the rig but as you can see they aren’t very clear through the screens.  I opened the door at one point to take a picture but the snow is not really showing up.

Liberty, KS 0501to0502137

I had a friend who posted this picture on my Facebook page and said if I saw her I had better run for cover…let’s hope I never see her 🙂  Because we all now about that nasty tornado that came through Kansas after she was seen.

Hope you enjoyed our little trip.

Z is for …

Z is for Zippity Do Day

Just saying that makes me want to just go skipping down a lane.

What do you think of when you hear that phrase?

Well we didn’t go skipping today ~ we went for a drive 🙂

First let me share the drive we went on last Thursday, 4/25/13

It was a beautiful sunny day and a great day for a drive.  Ron said if it stays warm and sunny soon it will be time to put the soft top on the Jeep, we just figure out where to store the hard top.

Liberty, KS 0425to043013

And then on Sunday after Ron got off work we went for another drive

I love all the purple flowers we see along the roads.  And Ron just missed hitting the turtle so we had to go back and get a couple of pictures of him.  When we turned back around to go the way we wanted he had started to stick his head out a little but we didn’t stop to take another picture.  Maybe if I see another one I could make it a pet 🙂

Liberty, KS 0425to0430131

There are all kinds of roads ~ paved, two lane, gravel and even dirt roads.  But we love the scenery!  And we met the sweetest lady and her two kids (older teenagers) at the little grocery store Altamont ~ she gave us all types of places to visit and see in the area.  Ron was excited to hear about a lake about 30 miles from our campsite where we can go swimming this summer.

Liberty, KS 0425to0430132

The center row of this picture is an old school house at an intersection out in the country.  It would have been fun to traipse around inside but it is all fenced off.

Liberty, KS 0425to0430133

When we first came across these horses (top right photo) it appeared they were grazing in the middle of the road.  But upon getting closer we found they were actually in a fenced field at a corner.  We saw lots of beautiful horses. Each time we saw a Paint, we would talk about our sweet friends, Al & Selma Gienger.  We miss their friendship and fellowship here on earth but we know one day we will be celebrating in heaven with them.

Liberty, KS 0425to0430134

I read in one of the local free papers that a Farmers Market was going to be held on Tuesday’s from 4 to 6 p.m. and today would be the first one of the season.  Guess it was time for another road trip – this one 33 miles away according to Maggie (our GPS)

These are pictures of every road we turned on as we drove from Liberty, KS (the actual town we live in) to Parsons, KS.  Again, see all the different types of roads.  We did have to make one stop and that was the gas station in the center of the picture.  Gas was $3.39 a gallon.

All the roads we went on to get to Parsons, KS

These are sights we saw on the road leading into Parsons.

Liberty, KS 0425to0430136-001

The center picture below is the Farmers Market.  There were three vendors.  We bought some green onions, radishes and a dozen brown eggs.  And we got it all for $3!!!

We just loved seeing all the old homes.  I would love to see the interior of some of them, especially the home pictured in the top left and the two along the left border – all the same home.

Liberty, KS 0425to0430137

These are the roads from Parsons, KS to Angola, KS

Liberty, KS 0425to0430138

This is entering into Angola.  The top picture is the old school…it has lots of broken windows but we surmise it was beautiful in its prime.  And the Methodist church next to the school.  Sunday School is at 9 a.m. and the worship service begins at 10:45.  Reminds us of what we think ole’ country churches looked like.

Liberty, KS 0425to04301310

And what could be better to end the day then with a foot massage.  I love when Ron massages my feet and puts lots of lotion on them ~ it is just difficult because I am so darn ticklish and so we have to stop every few minutes till I quit laughing.  And don’t those toenails look pretty – yep, he also does my nails for me 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yep ~ I am one blessed lady!!!
